Fault code P010F – mass or volume air flow (MAF/VAF) sensor “A/B” correlation

Fault code P010F is called “Mass or Volume Air Flow (MAF/VAF) Sensor “A/B” Correlation” but in different programs it may be called differently. This fault designation applies to all vehicles equipped with OBD-II.

Technical description and explained code P010F

This Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is a general powertrain code. Error P010F is considered a general code because it applies to all makes and models of vehicles. Although the specific repair steps may vary slightly from model to model.

Fault code P010F – mass or volume air flow (MAF/VAF) sensor

Stored code P010F means that the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has detected a Mass Air Flow (MAF) or Volume Air Flow (VAF) fault. This error applies to vehicles equipped with multiple intake air sources that require multiple MAF/VAF sensors.

When an internal combustion engine is running, a strong vacuum is created that draws in the air needed to complete the combustion process. The air drawn in is controlled by the throttle valve when accelerating and the idle control valve (IAC) when the engine is idling.

To optimize fuel economy and minimize harmful exhaust emissions, the correct ratio of fuel to air is essential. The air entering the intake is measured using MAF or VAF sensors.

The fuel and ignition strategy is calculated (PCM) using the data from these sensors. The air that passes through these devices is called metered air.

If more than one MAF/VAF sensor is used in the vehicle, the PCM compares the data between them, wanting the same data.

If the degree of airflow or “A/B” sensor voltage changes by more than a preprogrammed amount. Then code P010F will be stored and the malfunction indicator light may illuminate.

Symptoms of vehicle malfunctions

The main signal that an error P010F has occurred is the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is also known as the CheckEngine Light.

It can also be warning signs such as:

  1. The “Check engine” control lamp on the control panel will light up (the code will be memorized as a malfunction).
  2. There may also be depleted or rich exhaust codes present.
  3. Reduced engine performance.
  4. Increased fuel consumption.
  5. Engine cannot be accelerated, throttle response is unresponsive.
  6. Ignition jerking/missing at idle or under load.
  7. Engine stalls or starts poorly.

Fault P010F is a serious error, as it can affect drivability and fuel efficiency problems. Therefore, it is recommended to eliminate it as soon as possible.

Factors that can cause this error code

The error code P010F can mean that one or more of the following problems have occurred:

  • Defective MAF/VAF mass flow or volume flow sensor.
  • Mass or volume flow sensor (MAF/VAF) may be dirty.
  • Leaking intake air.
  • The electrical harness or connectors to the MAF/VAF may be frayed (open, short-circuited, poor connection, etc.).
  • The fuel vapor vent valve from the tank is damaged and is introducing extra air into the intake port.
  • Worn or damaged gasket under throttle valve or intake manifold.
  • Worn vacuum lines.
  • Clogged catalytic converter (on some models).

How to fix or reset OBD-2 code P010F

Some suggested steps for troubleshooting and fix the error code P010F:

  1. Check all cables and associated connectors leading to the mass or volume flow sensor (MAF/VAF). Make sure they are not broken or frayed. Repair or replace if necessary.
  2. Check for air leaks in the intake system. Correct the problem if you find a leak.
  3. Inspect the electrical wires going to the mass or volumetric air flow sensor (MAF/VAF). Replace them if damage is found.
  4. If the air filter is dirty, it must be replaced.
  5. There are air intake systems with a mesh, in which case you need to make sure it is clean.
  6. This code may be caused by a high resistance in the ground circuit of the absolute pressure sensor (MAF/VAF). In this case the sensor must be replaced.

Diagnose and repair of problems

Check all wiring, as well as mass or volume flow sensor connectors. Make sure they are intact, not frayed or broken. The wiring should not be too close to wires or ignition coils, relays, etc.

Visually check for obvious air leaks in the air intake system. Also lack of vacuum on the MAP sensor can cause this fault code. It’s worth checking the air filter, if it’s dirty, it needs to be replaced. If there is a screen in the air intake system, make sure it is clean.

Carefully inspect the mass air flow sensor for contaminants such as dirt, dust, oil, etc. Clean it thoroughly with MAF cleaning spray, in some cases this helps get rid of the P010F error.

Low minimum air flow through the sensor port can cause this fault code to set at idle or during deceleration. Check for vacuum leaks after the mass or volumetric airflow sensor.

Sensor testing

Use a diagnostic tool to monitor the mass or volumetric airflow sensor values, in real time. Check the technical service bulletins (TSB) for your specific model for known problems with your vehicle.

Atmospheric pressure (BARO), which is used to calculate the predicted MAF value, is originally based on the MAP sensor. High resistance in the MAP sensor ground circuit may set this trouble code.

Perform an exhaust backpressure test to determine if the catalytic converter is clogged.

If you do need to replace the mass air flow sensor. It is recommended that you use the original OEM sensor from the manufacturer. Not to buy replacement parts of dubious origin.

Using a reusable air filter can cause a P010F error code if a lot of oil has accumulated on it. Oil can get on the thin wire and create a film inside the mass airflow sensor or contaminate it. Use something like MAF/VAF sensor spray to clean in such situations.
