Fault code P061B – internal control module torque calculation performance

Fault code P061B is called “Internal Control Module Torque Calculation Performance” but in different programs it may be called differently. This fault designation applies to all vehicles equipped with OBD-II.

Stored code P061B means that the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has detected an internal performance error in the engine torque calculating system. Other controllers may also detect a PCM processor performance error and cause this code to be stored.

Torque is monitored using inputs from the mass air flow sensor (MAF) and accelerator pedal position sensor (APP). The desired or approximate required engine torque is calculated using the APP sensor. And the actual torque is calculated using the mass airflow sensor (MAF) data.

When the ignition is on and the PCM is energized, numerous self-tests of the internal controller processing are initiated. In addition to performing self-tests, the Controller Area Network (CAN) also compares signals from each individual module. To ensure that each controller is operating properly, these tests are performed simultaneously.

If the PCM detects a discrepancy between the desired torque and the actual torque, indicating an internal calculation error. Then code P061B will be stored and the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) may illuminate.

Next, connect the scan tool to the vehicle’s diagnostic port and retrieve any stored codes and data. Make a note of this information in case the code turns out to be intermittent.
