Fault code P0219 – engine overspeed condition

Fault code P0219 is called “Engine Overspeed Condition” but in different programs it may be called differently. This fault designation applies to all vehicles equipped with OBD-II.

Technical description and explained code P0219

This Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is a general powertrain code. Error P0219 is considered a general code because it applies to all makes and models of vehicles. Although the specific repair steps may vary slightly from model to model.

Fault code P0219 – engine overspeed condition

The PCM uses input signals from the crankshaft position sensor (CKP), camshaft position sensor (CMP), and transmission output speed sensor. To determine if an engine overspeed condition has occurred.

In most cases the overspeed condition will automatically be met by the overspeed limiter. When the transmission is in neutral or parked.

When the PCM detects an overspeed condition, one of several actions can be taken. The PCM will stop pulsing the fuel injectors or slow the ignition timing to reduce the engine RPM until it returns to an acceptable level.

If the PCM cannot effectively return the RPM to an acceptable level within a certain period of time. Code P0219 will be stored and the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) may illuminate.

Symptoms of vehicle malfunctions

The main signal that an error P0219 has occurred is the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is also known as the CheckEngine Light.

It can also be warning signs such as:

  1. The “Check engine” control lamp on the control panel will light up (the code will be written in the memory as a malfunction).
  2. Detonation codes may be present in the cylinders.
  3. The engine may repeatedly overspeed.
  4. In cars with manual transmission, clutch slippage may occur.
  5. There may be no symptoms other than a stored fault code.

Depending on the symptoms, error P0219 may be serious, e.g. if the permissible crankshaft speed is repeatedly exceeded. Or moderate, if there are no symptoms other than a stored fault code.

Factors that can cause this error code

The error code P0219 can mean that one or more of the following problems have occurred:

  • Defective CKP or CMP sensor.
  • Faulty transmission input or output speed sensor.
  • Open or short circuit in wiring harness.
  • Defective wiring harness connector.
  • Human error caused by intentional or accidental engine overspeed.
  • Sometimes faulty PCM module is the cause.

How to fix or reset OBD-2 code P0219

Some suggested steps for troubleshooting and fix the error code P0219:

  1. Read all stored data and error codes with an OBD-II scan tool. To find out when and under what circumstances error P0219 appeared.
  2. Clear the error codes from the computer memory and test-drive the vehicle to find out if the fault appears again.
  3. If the error code appears again, visually inspect the electrical wires and connectors.
  4. Check the crankshaft speed sensor as well as the camshaft speed sensor.
  5. Test the transmission input or output speed sensor.
  6. If there are no defects, check the PCM itself and its program part.

Diagnose and repair of problems

If code P0219 is stored, make sure that the vehicle has not been driven at speeds higher than recommended by the manufacturer. You must also make sure that the clutch is working efficiently before continuing with the diagnosis. This applies to vehicles with manual transmissions.

Connect the scan tool to the vehicle’s diagnostic port and retrieve any stored codes and freeze frame data. After that, remove the codes and perform a normal trip to see if the code returns.

Using a multimeter and oscilloscope, check the CKP, CMP, and transmission speed sensors. If any sensor is faulty, replace it, it may be the cause of this error.

Use a multimeter to check the voltage reference as well as the ground on the sensor terminals. Disconnect all associated controllers and check individual system circuits for resistance and continuity, repair or replace if necessary.

If all associated sensors, circuits, and connectors are within manufacturer’s specifications, but error P0219 remains. The PCM should be checked, and the programming errors should be checked.

On which vehicles does this problem occur most frequently

Fault code P0219 can occur on different vehicles but there are statistics on which brands this occurs most often. Here is a list of some of them:

  • Acura
  • Chevrolet
  • Dodge (RAM)
  • Fiat
  • Ford (Explorer, Focus, Kuga)
  • Honda (Accord)
  • Land Rover (Defender)
  • Mercedes-Benz
  • Mitsubishi
  • Opel
  • Ssangyong (Kyron)
  • Volkswagen
  • GAZelle (Business)

Fault code P0219 can sometimes be found with other errors. The most common are the following: P0234, P2195, P2196, P219A.
